Erythema Nodosum
Erythema nodosum literally means "red bumps." These tender red nodules, which usually appear over the shins or ankles and sometimes on the arms, occur most in people with ulcerative colitis (2-4 percent), although they may also affect those with Crohn's disease of the colon (1-2 percent). Women are more commonly affected than men. Erythema nodosum generally appears in conjunction with a flare-up of IBD, but it may also occur just before a flare-up. It tends to improve when the bowel disease is brought under control.
Erythema nodosum is most common on the shins, but it may also occur on other areas of the body (buttocks, calves, ankles, thighs and upper extremities). The lesions begin as flat, but firm, hot red painful lumps (approximately an inch across). Within a few days they may become purplish then over several weeks fade to a brownish flat patch. Systemic findings may include fever and malaise.

On behalf of learning, and use as teaching tools for those of us who need to
know about our disease, I have tried to supply you with as much information as
I could find on all of the drugs, treatments and disorders associated with
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. I have tried to blend all facts supported by research
and also from personal experiences of other IBD sufferers into one readable webpage, and any and all information presented here is not entirely
from one source. Most information contained within these pages is found in the public domain.
